What is this project about:

The objective of this large-scale systematic review and meta-analysis is to synthesise cross-sectional and longitudinal bivariate associations between parental self-efficacy and a wide range of child and parent outcomes, and to examine potential moderators of these associations. This review will clarify the strength and generality of links between parental self-efficacy and relevant outcomes, thereby informing theory, assessment, and intervention research in clinical and family psychology.

Project pre-registration: This project has been registered on PROSPERO in February 2026 (CRD420261281033).

For study authors:

You may have received an email from us requesting additional information about your published studies. If you would like to help, please use the link provided in the email we sent you. We would be very grateful for your assistance.

What variables are we looking for:

We would like to have the Pearson’s correlation(s), between Parental Self-Efficacy and measures that could fit in the following categories:

  • Child mental health and wellbeing (e.g., internalising, externalising)
  • Child academic performance (e.g., academic rating, GPA)
  • Peer relationships, (cyber)bullying, and (cyber)victimisation
  • Parental stress, mental health, and wellbeing
  • Parenting styles, parenting practices, and parental involvement
  • Parent-child relationships and attachment
  • Parental relationship and co-parenting

If the measures include multiple subscales, we would particularly appreciate subscale-level associations where possible.

What information is needed:

For cross-sectional studies, we would like to receive the correlations between parental self-efficacy and eligible outcomes. Our short online form asks you to enter those correlation coefficients.

For longitudinal studies, we would like to have a single correlation matrix that contains parental self-efficacy measure(s) and eligible outcome measure(s) across all waves. This will allow us to derive the longitudinal associations between these variables. Our short online form asks you to upload the correlation matrix as a single file. Please add any relevant information to help us make sure the variable names can be understood by our project team members.

For intervention studies, we would like to have:

  1. A single correlation matrix that contains the associations between parental self-efficacy and eligible outcomes at baseline and combines both the intervention group(s) and the control group(s).
  2. A single correlation matrix that contains parental self-efficacy measure(s) and eligible outcome measure(s) across all measurement points for the control group(s) only.

Our short online form asks you to upload the correlation matrix as a single file. Please add any relevant information to help us make sure the variable names can be understood by our project team members.

For studies involving multiple groups of parents (e.g., mothers and fathers, multiple sub-studies), we would like to have separate correlations for each group. Our online form asks you to either enter those correlation coefficients (2 groups) or upload the correlation matrix files (more than 2 groups).

What if my study measures cannot be considered as continuous or ordinal (e.g., Yes/No, High/Medium/Low):

If one variable is dichotomous, please still provide correlation. If any of the variables is categorical, please provide us with any summary statistics that would allow us to derive Pearson’s correlations (e.g., ANOVA, χ2). Please feel free to get in touch with us.
